The Allen & Wheelock Sidehammer Navy revolver, manufactured from 1858 to 1861, is thought to be based on the Colt Model 1855 “Root” Pocket revolver design. Chambered in .36 caliber with six-shot cylinder roll engraved with a forest/animal scene. This is technically an Allen & Wheelock Sidehammer Navy revolver, 3rd Type as defined by the spring-loaded triggerguard/loading lever catch, single screw side plate, flat rear cylinder face, and two patent date barrel address. The octagonal barrel is 7-½ inches long.
The blued finish is aged brown, and the case color is no longer visible. Areas of pitting and patina are common throughout the metal surfaces. The walnut grips are varnished with some small, scattered handling marks and one older chip on the bottom of the left grip. The cylinder is tight and the action is strong and functions as intended. The bore is semi-bright with scattered small, darker patches of pitting, and has very good rifling. The forest animal cylinder scene is excellent
On the left side of the barrel, the address marking is light but legible and reads ‘ALLEN & WHEELOCK. WORCHESTER, MASS. U.S./ALLEN’S PT’S. JAN. 13. DEC. 15. 1857. SEPT. 7. 1858’. The batch/SN is clearly marked on the triggerguard/loading lever, cylinder indexing plate, arbor pin, rear face of the cylinder, inside the side plate, interior side of both grips, and on the bottom left corner of the grip strap (under the grip).
The holster is in excellent shape. The leather has hardened with age but remains flexible and the top opens without issue. No major cracking is present, and the flap strap is intact. Some wear exists on the belt loop and surrounding area on the back of the holster, as expected with the holster being worn. No manufacturing markings are visible.
Given the low manufacture numbers for the Allen & Wheelock Sidehammer Navy, they are difficult to find and due to the inherent weaknesses of the sidehammer design, when they are found, they seldom work. As one might imagine, the holsters are even more rare. This is a great combination of revolver and holster that would fit in any revolver or Allen collection
