A Type 14 pistol, chambered in 8mm Nambu, manufactured in January of 1943 (Showa 18.1) by Chou Kogyo K.K. (Chou Kogyo Co., Ltd.) at the Kokubunji Factory under Nagoya Army Arsenal supervision. Chou Kogyo K.K. was the result of merging The Nambu Rifle Manufacturing Company with two other private corporations in 1936. Together with Nambu Rifle’s previous production, around 112,000 of these arms were manufactured between 1933 and 1944, when the factory at Kokubunji closed, including both original and 1st series pistols. High production numbers make Kokubunji produced pistols fairly common but are still difficult to find in both good condition and matching serial numbers and magazines, like this 1st series example.

Features of this Type 14 pistol include the large, winter triggerguard; a blued finish; Philippine Mahogany wood grip panels; and fine-knurled cocking knob. The 73mm long striker is correct in its blued finish and lack of SN marks; the correct flat-sided striker guide is 47mm in length. Both parts carry proper Kokubunji factory inspection marks. The wood grip panels are correct with both their 17 grooves and lack of SN. The right grip panel has an inspection mark stamped on the inside. Both magazines are the correct Type VII variant with latch cut outs and 9-groove alloy bases.

Markings on this Type 14 pistol include the Nagoya Army Arsenal and Nambu Rifle Manufacturing Co./Chuo Kogyo Co. symbols followed by the Iroha “i” 1st series symbol and then the SN on the right side of the barrel extension. Below, on the right-side frame flat, SHO kanji character preceding the date of manufacture, followed by period correct TO inspection marking in “A” position. On the left side of the barrel extension, is the Type (model) designation in Kanji characters. Forward of the trigger, also on the left side of the barrel extension, are the Kanji safety markings (left “Fire”, right “Safe”). Serial numbers and three-digit partial numbers match on frame, locking block, trigger guard, trigger, cocking knob, magazine latch, bolt, magazine safety, barrel/barrel extension, and both magazines. Small parts inspection marked as seen in photos. The Type VII magazines both carry the last three SN digits and TO inspection mark. The spare has the dot centered above the SN, the appropriate location at the time of production.

Overall, the blued finish is in very good condition on the Type 14 pistol. Service wear is present as minor finish wear and marks. They are most notable around the muzzle, triggerguard, grip panels, and magazine baseplate. Light straw color is visible on the trigger and magazine latch, while hints of straw color are visible in protected areas on the safety lever and magazine retainer spring. The left side of the barrel extension bears the typical circle mark left by the safety lever; this mark extends into the upper left corner of the grip. Bore is bright, clean, and has well-defined rifling. The action is strong and crisp when cocking the pistol and the trigger pull is good. This is a very nice 1st series Kokubunji Factory produced Type 14 pistol.
