For Sale: Mossberg Model 44US Rifle (US Property Marked)

The Mossberg Model 44US rifle, chambered in .22 L.R., was employed by the U.S. military for marksmanship training of recruits. Approximately 53,000 were manufactured by O.F. Mossberg & Sons, Inc between 1943-44 as less expensive military trainer than the Springfield M1922. The 44US had a blued finish, birch stock, 26-inch barrel, fixed front sight, and 7-round magazine. Lyman 57 MS rear sights are found on the early production rifles; however, most have Mossberg Microclick rear sights. The Mossberg Model 44US rifles used by the military are US property marked, along with a serial number, on top of the receiver, above the chamber. This mark differentiates the military rifle from the civilian version which carries no SN or property mark.

This Mossberg Model 44US rifle has a hooded front sight and Mossberg Microclick S-100 rear sight. The plastic trigger guard fits perfectly and is not cracked. ‘O.F. MOSSBERG & SONS, INC/NEW HAVEN, CONN. U.S.A./44 U.S. 22 L.R./U.S PROPERTY’ is marked on the barrel just behind the barrel band. Above the chamber, on the receiver, is marked ‘U.S. PROPERTY/SER. NO. 162542’. The ‘MOSSBERG-MICROCLICK/S-100 PAT. PEND.’ marking is located on the rear sight. The knob on the bottom of the 7-round magazine is a screw in block that allows for .22 Short to be used with the rifle (seen as the knob on the magazine bottom in the photos). Minor handling marks are found on the barrel, stock, and buttplate. The bore is like new. Overall, this is an excellent example of a military training rifle and is perfect for the collector and shooter alike.
