The Joslyn Model 1864 carbine, along with their Model 1862 predecessors, were widely used by cavalry troops during the Civil War. Approximately 12,500 of this model, designed by Benjamin Franklin Joslyn, were manufactured by the Joslyn Fire Arms Co in Stonington, CT between 1864 and 1865. Of these, the US Government purchased around 8000 carbines, all of which will carry inspection marks.
The Joslyn Model 1864 carbine is a breechloading arm that utilizes a side swing vented breech block with pull-out knob locking latch. The firing pin is housed in the breech block protected by a circular housing machine on the block. Opening the chamber is as simple as pulling on the spring-loaded knob and swinging the breech block to the left.
This carbine exhibits an overall aged brown patina on the metal surfaces. The breech block functions as designed, and the action is strong and crisp. Some minor service handling marks are found throughout the stock and some wood is missing from the lock area. Two legible ‘FDL’ (Frederick D. Livingston) cartouches are located on the stock, left side above the saddle ring bar. An ‘F.D.L’ is also stamped on the left side of the barrel under the rear sight – which is marked ‘L’ on the same side. The breech has a matching serial number to the upper tang and its rear face is marked ‘B.F. JOSLYN’S PATENT/OCTOBER 8TH 1861/JUNE 24th 1862’. The ‘JOSLYN FIRE ARMS Co./STONINGTON CONN./1864’ lock marking is worn but legible. The bore is bright and clean with well-defined rifling and one very small spot of pitting near the muzzle. This is a very nice Joslyn Model 1864 carbine that could be used on the range or added to a Civil War carbine collection
