The Ruger No. 1 rifle is based on the English Farquharson falling block rifle design of the early 1870s. Manufactured by Sturm, Ruger, & Co., primarily between 1966-2010 (with some limited production still available), the No. 1 rifle came in many iterations and calibers. No matter the variation, all No. 1 rifles feature the Farquharson style falling block action with internal hammer and curved lever. The falling block action lends itself to ambidextrous shooting as does the tang mounted safety. Over the decades the rifle garnered an excellent reputation as a hunting and varmint rifle.
Manufactured in 1983 (and listed by Ruger with the model number 01310), this Ruger No. 1 is chambered in .22-250 Remington and has a 26-inch tapered barrel, quarter rib with scope mounted, checkered walnut stock and semi-beaver tail forearm. The metal is blued and the wood has a nice semi-gloss finish that highlights the iridescent nature of the wood’s beautiful grain pattern. The red rubber recoil pad is soft, pliable, and marked with the Ruger phoenix. The serial number is stamped on the bottom of the receiver, to the left of the breechblock. The barrel is marked on the left side, near the receiver, with a script Ruger ‘R’ within an oval. Forward of this mark is the caliber designation ‘.22-250’. The barrel top, about halfway between the muzzle and receiver, is marked with a firearms use warning above ‘STURM, RUGER & CO. INC., SOUTHPORT, CONN. U.S.A.’. Ruger’s banner above ‘No.1’ is stamped on top of the receiver, forward of the breechblock. A gold Ruger phoenix adorns the pistol grip endcap. There are some minor handling marks in the wood and the metal is near perfect, this is a lightly used rifle. The bore and breechblock are like new. Comes with a Tasco Pronghorn 8-32×44 target scope (#TS832X44) with fine crosshairs and dot. Scope has two metal screw-on endcaps and both 3-inch and 5-inch sunshades that can screw together to make an 8-inch sunshade. The optics are clear, and, like the rest of the rifle, the finish is in excellent condition. In the field, on the range, or in your collection, this Ruger No.1 rifle will not disappoint.
