The Husqvarna Vapenfabrik M1887 Swedish revolver represents the culmination of Sweden’s arms modernization efforts of the 1880s. In 1884, the Swedish military began studies and then trials of arms (both rifles and handguns) in an effort to bring their military up to the current standards of other European nations. The results of the handgun trials led the Swedish authorities to settle on a design based on the Belgian Nagant Model 1878 revolver yet chambered in 7.5x22mm. Thirty revolvers were produced for trials, giving rise to the Nagant M1887. Following adoption of the revolver, Sweden contracted with the Liege, Belgium based arms company Emile and Leon Nagant. In 1897, Husqvarna Vapenfabrik obtained the license to manufacture the M1887, which secured the supply of the revolvers to within Swedish borders. Manufacture continued until 1905 with an approximate 14,000 M1877 revolvers exiting Husqvarna’s factory.
Seen here is a Husqvarna Vapenfabrik M1887 revolver, serial number 29XX manufactured ca. 1898. Features include a double-action, six-shot design, a firing pin integral to the hammer, lanyard ring, 4 ½-inch barrel, and square front sight (Nagant versions have a rounded front sight). The frame, cylinder, trigger guard, and barrel are all blued, while the hammer, trigger, cylinder pin assembly, and loading assembly are all straw-colored. The wooden grips are checkered. Major parts carry the matching serial number.
Markings include ‘HUSQVARNA’ over the SN over ‘PTB’ on the left side of the frame, forward of the cylinder. The SN is stamped on the front cylinder face, left side of the barrel, barrel lug, loading lever, and cylinder pin lock. The right side of the frame bears the Landstormen mark ‘L No 546/A’
Overall, this is a very good M1887. The blue finish remains strong with highpoint wear at the muzzle, trigger guard, cylinder, and butt. The straw-color is strong on the hammer, loading assembly, trigger and cylinder pin assembly. Service handling marks are scattered throughout the metal surfaces. The grips show little wear and are not cracked. The bore is clean, bright and has excellent rifling. The action is strong and cylinder indexes well while drawing the hammer back.
An excellent Husqvarna Vapenfabrik M1887 Swedish revolver that is suitable for the collector.
