The Colt Single Action Army revolver is one of the most storied and longest produced arms in US firearms history. Also known as Peacemaker, Frontier, and simply as Colt SAA, among other names, this revolver was ubiquitous on the expanding western frontier and carried by both outlaws and lawmen of the Old West. In addition, the Colt Single Action Army revolver saw extensive military service and became highly popular arm of the Hollywood cinema industry. Popularity, history, and quality have turned these revolvers into sought after arms for the collector, target shooting enthusiast, and cowboy action shooter.
Production began in 1873 and continues, with minor interruptions, to today with over 30 calibers and countless variations, spinoff models, and copies. The serial number matching Colt SAA offered here is a First Generation (1873-1941) civilian/commercial revolver falling within the Intermediate Smokeless Powder grouping (1908-1920; SN range 300,000-339,000). Manufactured in 1911 and chambered in .32 Winchester Centerfire (W.C.F.), this SAA features a 6-shot fluted cylinder held in place with a spring-loaded catch, 5 ½ -inch barrel with crowned muzzle, iron blade front sight, blued finish with case hardened frame and hammer, and hard rubber grips with rampant Colt within an oval.
The top of the barrel is marked with the ‘COLT’S PT. F.A. MFG. Co. HARTFORD CT. U.S.A.’ barrel address and the left side, near the frame, is marked ‘.32 W.C.F.’. Matching serial numbers on this Colt Single Action Army revolver are stamped on the frame, triggerguard, and butt. ‘PAT SEPT 19. 1871./JULY. 2 72 JAN. 19. 75.’ is stamped on the frame, left side, forward of the rampant colt logo. The loading gate is marked ‘598’. The initials ‘PJW’, significance unknown, are scratched into the underside of each grip.
Overall, this Colt SAA conveys the look of an often carried and cared for revolver. The blued finish is worn off the cylinder, left side of the barrel, grip straps, triggerguard, and highpoints yet remains strong on the front site, the top, right side, and bottom of the barrel as well as on the recessed areas of the ejector housing and cylinder faces and flutes. The case-hardened frame colors are clearly visible around the left side frame patent marking; front portion of the frame, forward of the cylinder, and wrap around the top strap from the left to right side. More muted colors are seen on the left and right sides of the frame under the cylinder as they disappear toward the grips. No color is visible on the hammer. The hard rubber grips have shrunk slightly with age and are evenly worn on both sides with the checkering and rampant colt ovals smoothed and still prominent. All screwheads are in excellent condition. The bore is excellent; clean, bright, and with sharp rifling. The action is strong with crisp clicks of the hammer and good trigger release. The cylinder indexes perfectly and is tight.
This is a great Colt Single Action Army revolver that wears its history well. A perfect candidate for any Colt or revolver collection or shooting at the range or cowboy action events.
