Browning Hi-Power Sport C series pistol, semi-auto, single-action, chambered in 9mm Parabellum and manufactured in Belgium in 1974 by Fabrique Nationale (FN). Introduced in 1971 as Browning entered the shooting sports market, the Browning Hi-Power Sport features a high, square front sight, Type A adjustable rear sight (aka “Beer Can” sight). Other features, such as the polished blue finish, walnut grips, external extractor, 118mm barrel, spur hammer, and 13-round capacity magazine are standard for period commercial Hi-Powers. At the time, the first two numerals of Browning serial numbers indicated the date of manufacture. These two numbers were followed by a letter code denoting model (e.g. C= Hi-Power, U= Challenger, N= .380 auto pistol), thus Hi-Powers produced ca. 1969-75 are known as C Series pistols by collectors. The Browning Hi-Power Sport represents only a fraction of all C Series Hi-Powers and combined with a relatively short production window (1971-1975), are not common.
Markings include ‘BROWNING ARMS COMPANY MORGAN UTAH & MONTREAL P.Q./MADE IN BELGIUM’ on the left side of the slide. A double stamp number ‘3’ is visible on the front left of the trigger guard and the serial number is stamped on the front grip strap. A proof mark with a crown atop an oval containing the letters ‘PN’ is found on the front right side of the trigger guard and on the barrel. The barrel is also marked ‘CAL. 9m/m P’ above the chamber, ‘L’ on the right side of the lug, and ‘/3’ on the lug, left side. Under the slide, behind the chamber, are the following markings listed as seen front to rear, a proof mark with a crown atop an oval containing the letters ‘PN’ followed by ‘PN’, followed by ‘P’ and a partial O, and finally ‘/3’. The left of the grip frame is stamped with the letter ‘J’ on the bottom rear corner, under the grip, and the right side, same corner, is marked ‘<’. The underside of the wooden grips are each marked with a chalk white ‘63’, ‘FN’ oval logo cartouche, stamped ‘2’, and what appears to be an ‘M’ and unledgible numbers, perhaps ending in ‘2’, in black marker. The magazine is marked ‘JL’ on the bottom.
Overall condition of this Browning Hi-Power Sport is excellent with light handling marks on the backstrap. The grips show very little wear, and the bore is bright with excellent rifling. Some use marks are present on the barrel, near the chamber, and shooting residue remains on interior parts. This is a very attractive, uncommon Hi-Power that will fit nicely into a Browning collection or shooter’s inventory.
