The Model 1861 Dahlgren “Bowie” Bayonet is named for its designer, Admiral John Dahlgren (Dahlgren “Bowie” Bayonet) and intended for use on the model 1861 Whitney-Ville “Plymouth” Navy rifles. One side of the ricasso is stamped U.S.N. over D.R. over an anchor over 1862. The stamps are worn, the U.S.N. is faint and the last digit for the date is difficult to discern. No maker name is visible on opposite side of ricasso, but Dalgren bayonets were made by Ames. A script DR inside an oval is stamped on the pommel above an anchor (both DR marks are the inspector initials – commonly attributed to Daniel Reynolds, the inspector at the Ames factory in Chicopee, Mass). No scabbard.
