A Model 1842 musket manufactured by Springfield in 1846, the first year of the Mexican-American War. Features are standard for the model and include a 42-inch round barrel held in place with three barrel bands, iron mountings, steel ramrod with trumpet shaped head, bayonet lug mounted under the barrel, and walnut stock with comb.
Markings on this Model 1842 musket include the ‘V/P’ over eagle head proof mark on the left side of the breech. Forward of the hammer, on the lockplate, is the American eagle motif over ‘US’. The lock is vertically marked ‘SPRING/FIELD/1846’ behind the hammer. ‘1846’ is stamped on the tang, matching the date on the lockplate. On the left side of the stock, behind the side plate, is an oval cartouche stamp with a script ‘RC’, the inspector’s mark of Rufus Chandler. ‘US’ is stamped on the buttplate tang, forward of the screw and an ‘L’ sub-inspector’s stamp is found on the side plate.
The metal surfaces are bright with some service marks scattered throughout. Hardened grease remains in corners and difficult to reach spaces that removes easily. All markings are strong with crisp edges. Service marks are found throughout the walnut stock with a chip at the rear of the side plate and gouge on the left side of the butt. Chandler’s inspection cartouche is clearly visible. The smoothbore is clean and mirror bright with no signs of oxidation. Overall, this is a great wartime Model 1842 musket.
