The Remington New York Model carbine, along with its rifle counterpart, was manufactured on contract with the State of New York National Guard. The initial contract approved in 1871 only called for 15000 rifles and did not include any carbines. It was not until 1873 when NY State issued a second contract for 4500 rifles that carbines (1500 in quantity) were ordered. Both rifle and carbine share design features that distinguish the NY model, such as a checkering within a three-point shield on both the hammer and breechblock thumb lever, a higher and more curved hammer, and outward protruding (instead of upward) breechblock thumb lever. Another significant feature of the NY contract arms is the Type 3 action modified with a safety lock that returns the hammer to half cock upon closing the breech.

Here we present a Remington New York Model carbine, chambered in .50-70 Gov’t, in good overall condition for an arm of its age and military use. Blue and case color finishes have faded with time and turned to a aged brown patina in some areas. The walnut stock is in good shape with two small cracks in the firearm, right side, near the barrel band. The oil finish has faded on the left side of the forearm where a shooter’s hand would hold the carbine. Service handling marks are found on both wood and metals surfaces. The bore is bright with good, visible rifling and some areas of light pitting throughout. The action is tight and smooth, the safety lock functions as designed.

The tang address is of the early 1871 contract style and reads ‘REMINGTONS’ ILION, N.Y. U.S.A./PAT MAY 3D NOV 15TH 1864 APRIL 17TH 1866/AUG 27TH 1867 NOV 7TH 1871’. A capital ‘B’ is marked on the left side of the barrel band and barrel, just forward of the receiver. A number ‘4’ is stamped on the upper butt plate tang and ‘60’ is stamped on the buttstock toe line near the butt plate. Sub-inspector H.B. Hart’s inspector’s mark is visible on the right side of the wrist and consists of his initials, in script ‘HBH’ within a ribbon cartouche. Behind the inspector’s mark, also on the wrist is ‘TROOP “C” N.Y.’ Troop C was a cavalry unit that formed in December of 1895 and was part of the 2nd Brigade in Brooklyn, NY. This unit was mostly involved in crowd/riot control associated with worker’s strikes of the day. The left side of both the upper and lower tangs are marked ‘20445’.

It is also of note that this carbine is photographed and appears in George Layman’s book The All New Collector’s Guide to Remington Rolling Block Military Rifles of the World on pages 56-57. This Remington New York Model carbine is a fantastic addition for those collectors interested in both rolling block lineage and NY State history!
