The Remington New Model Army revolver was a major firearm used in the Civil War, second only to the Colt 1860 Army revolver. E. Remington & Sons manufactured this single-action, large frame, .44 caliber percussion revolver between 1863 and 1875, producing over 120,000. Features included an 8-inch octagon barrel with threads visible at the breech, a six-shot cylinder with safety notches on the cylinder shoulders, brass triggerguard, walnut grips, and blued finish.
This Remington New Model Army revolver here was manufactured in 1863 and has the early mortised cone front sight. Markings include the serial number on the bottom of the barrel, hidden by the loading lever. On the top of the barrel is the ‘PATENTED SEPT 14 1858/E. REMINGTON & SONS, ILION NEW YORK. U.S.A/NEW-MODEL’ barrel address stamp. The inspector’s stamp ‘M’ is found on the cylinder near the shoulders, and the front of the triggerguard. The inspector’s stamp ‘H’ is visible on the cylinder, near the front end and in line with the ‘M’ at the shoulder, and the left side of the frame, just in front of the cylinder. On the cylinder’s rear face is the letter ‘R’ followed by the last four digits of the serial number. The letter ‘T’ followed by the full matching serial number is found under the grips on the bottom, left side of the grip frame. The left grip bears the script letters ‘BH’ within a square of inspector’s Benjamin Hannis cartouche.
The blue finish on this New Model Army remains in protected areas as well as faded and in remanent condition throughout the metal surfaces. Minor service marks are scattered on the frame, and some pitting is seen on the barrel by the muzzle. Overall, the revolver has aged a subtle brown. The walnut grips carry service wear with no cracking or chipping. The inspector’s cartouche is light and legible. All screwheads are in excellent condition. The bore is very good and is semi-bright with scattered frosting and very sharp rifling. The action is strong and crisp, the cylinder indexes well and is held in place tightly at full and uncocked positions.
A survivor of the Civil War, this serial number matching Remington New Model Army is good representative of a war time service revolver and a nice addition to any military or general revolver collection.
